5-Day Northern Tanzania Itinerary
Best Time to Visit Tanzania for Safari & Wildlife Viewing
Tanzania offers year-round wildlife viewing, but the best time for safari depends on what you want to see and do. Whether you’re hoping to catch the Great Wildebeest Migration, spot the Big Five, or enjoy lush landscapes without the crowds, timing matters.
Here’s a month-by-month guide to help you decide when to visit plus a few tips on how to plan your trip for the best experience.
Best Overall Time for Safari: June to October (Dry Season)
If you’re after classic game drives and consistent wildlife sightings, June through October is your safest bet.
- Why go now? Animals gather around rivers and waterholes, grass is shorter, and the weather is mostly dry.
- Where to go: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara are all at their best.
- Bonus: This is also prime time for the Grumeti and Mara River crossings during the Wildebeest Migration.
For the Wildebeest Calving Season: January to March
If you want to see newborn animals and predators in action head to the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area in early in the year.
- Expect: Thousands of wildebeest calves born each day, plus big cats on the hunt.
- Good for: Photographers, wildlife lovers, and travelers avoiding high-season prices.
Green Season: November to May (Low Season Perks)
While some roads can be muddy and rains are frequent, the landscapes are vibrant, the air is clear, and lodges offer off-season rates.
- Birding: Peak birdwatching time with migratory species arriving.
- Crowds: Fewer tourists, more intimate wildlife encounters.
- Photography: Dramatic skies and green backdrops.
💡 Tip: The “long rains” are typically from March to May. Some remote camps close, but main parks remain open.
