Travellers Information

Overview

Planning a safari or beach holiday in Tanzania? Here’s everything you need to know before you go from visa rules to safety tips and packing advice. Whether you’re visiting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Zanzibar, this guide will help you prepare for a smooth trip.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most travelers need a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. You can apply online through the official eVisa portal or get one on arrival at major airports. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and has at least one blank page.

Vaccinations & Health

A yellow fever certificate is required if you’re coming from or passing through a yellow fever risk country. It’s also recommended to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria is present in many areas, so consult your doctor about prevention. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly advised.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (June to October) is ideal for wildlife safaris and the Great Migration. The green season (November to March) is great for birdwatching and fewer crowds. April and May are rainy, and some lodges may close.

Money & Payments

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and some lodges, often with a fee. ATMs are available in cities, but not in remote safari areas.

Cultural Etiquette

Tanzania is culturally diverse and conservative. Dress modestly, especially in towns and villages. Ask before taking photos of people, and try learning a few Swahili phrases locals appreciate it.

Safety Tips

Tanzania is generally safe for travelers, especially in national parks. Be cautious in cities, avoid walking alone at night, and keep valuables secure. Always follow your guide’s instructions during safaris.

Internet & Communication

Local SIM cards (like Vodacom or Airtel) are cheap and easy to get. Many lodges have Wi-Fi, but coverage can be limited in remote areas.

What to Pack

Bring light, neutral clothing for safaris, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a light jacket for cool evenings. Don’t forget binoculars and a good camera with extra batteries.
