Where Forest Meets the Rift Valley
Lake Manyara National Park is a lush, scenic gem nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania. Though smaller than many of Tanzania’s other national parks, it offers an incredible variety of landscapes from groundwater forests and open grasslands to acacia woodland and the alkaline lake itself. Its compact size makes it ideal for a half- or full-day safari, especially as part of a northern circuit tour.
The park is famous for its tree climbing lions, a rare and captivating sight that draws travelers from around the world. It’s also home to large herds of elephants, baboons, hippos, giraffes, and abundant birdlife, including thousands of flamingos that turn the lake pink during the wet season. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Lake Manyara’s unique setting offers a safari experience that feels more intimate and diverse than many expect. As you drive through its different zones from forest to lakeshore you’re likely to encounter a wide range of wildlife in a short amount of time. Canoeing is sometimes available when water levels allow, offering a fresh perspective of the lake and its surroundings.
We love including Lake Manyara in itineraries for travelers seeking variety, natural beauty, and the chance to explore a different side of Tanzania’s wild side. It’s a peaceful yet vibrant park that’s perfect for starting or ending your safari adventure.
